How to sell a car while you are abroad

Travelling overseas to get work is a popular thing to do. It is common to go for an overseas working trip, only to find that you are staying for longer than you intended. If the time is going to last for a few years, you will probably want to sell the car that you left behind.

Doing so would be much better than having it simply gathering rust and dust in a garage somewhere. When cars are left to rot, they lose value. Eventually, through lack of use and neglect, a vehicle will turn into a junk car. What a waste of money. The best option, therefore, is to sell it well before it gets that way, otherwise you will be left with a clunker. You will not even be able to give it away then.

So, it is agreed. Sell that car as soon as it looks like you won’t be using it for a few years due to you being overseas. Here are some good tips on how to do this with minimal fuss.

Get the Paperwork Organised

You can’t skip this step. Sales can’t be completed without the relevant paperwork being completed properly. To try and do so can lead to huge messes. If the ownership hasn’t been transferred and the person with the vehicle crashes, the old owner will still be liable for the costs.

Get all these documents properly filled and signed. Hand them over to someone you trust with your own life. Don’t give it to someone who you even have a smidgen of doubt over. This person can take care of the sales when you are abroad doing your thing.

Choosing the correct Buyer

Getting the paperwork together properly is the first step. Now you need to find someone who will buy the thing. The person who you trust as your representative so much that you gave them the paperwork can take care of these things. They will be able to help you with the advertising and all of that carry on. Keep in mind that buyers like to have photos as points of reference when buying cars. But that won’t be all they need. They also like to test drive.

This is why it is so important to get a friend or relative who can help you take care of these things for you. Otherwise you might find yourself completely unable to sell your car.

Negotiate with the Buyer

If you need to choose a proper price to sell your car at, and you are overseas, get in touch with someone who lives in the town you used to live at. They can look at the vehicle in question and properly assess how much it is worth by looking at its condition and doing some research.

Transfer of Ownership

This can also be done with the help of the representative who you have working on your behalf. They can finalise the transfer. Once this is done, you have sold your car. Well done.
